Athletes-military personnel of the Russian army can come to the 2023 World Cup in judo
Ukrainian judoka Daria Beloded commented admission of Russian and Belarusian judokas to international competitions. Their participation in the 2023 Judo World Championships could lead to boycott of the Ukrainian national team tournament.
“A week later, the World Championship in Qatar begins, for which the Ukrainian team was preparing and planning to go. But on the last day of registration for competitions on the international website, representatives of Russia, a terrorist country, appear in applications.
“But that’s not the most interesting thing. Recently, the International Olympic Committee provided recommendations to international sports federations and it was clearly written there which Russian athletes cannot participate in competitions, namely athletes who are on a contract in the armed forces and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or Belarus. But after all, all those people who will perform at the World Cup are military personnel. That’s nonsense, isn’t it.”
“I believe that it is unacceptable to allow the military personnel of the terrorist country, who kill Ukrainians every day, to participate in international competitions. This is not about sports values at all. It’s low”.
The International Judo Federation (IJF) allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under a neutral flag at international competitions under its auspices.
Earlier, the Ukrainian judo team named the squad for the 2023 World Championships in Doha (Qatar). According to the head coach of the national team Vitaliy Dubrova, there is still a possibility of a boycott of this tournament by the Ukrainian team. This will happen on the condition that judokas from Russia are admitted to the tournament. The 2023 World Judo Championship will run from May 7 to 14.
