The promoter believes that it is impossible to judge a boxer by one mediocre fight
Promoter Bob Arum said that the former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko could not show his best boxing in the previous fight with American Jemaine Ortiz due to the fact that defended Ukraine with arms in handinterrupting his preparation.
“People forget that he came from the battlefield. He was hiding. He didn’t prepare for battle. He had a gun, and he defended his Motherland. And then he got permission to come here to the United States. We gave him a relatively tough fight with Ortiz and he didn’t look good.”
“But I’m not surprised about the doubts. Crazy people. They see one mediocre performance and write the guy off. They forget the fact that he was a soldier who actually carried weapons in dangerous areas all the previous time.”
After the start of a full-scale Russian invasion, Lomachenko joined the ranks of the territorial defense of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky. Vice-President of the League of Professional Boxing of Ukraine Alina Shaternikova stated that Vasyl has been a member of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since the beginning of a full-scale war.
Lomachenko will fight the undisputed world lightweight champion Devin Haney next. The fight will take place on May 20 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden.
There are no plans to broadcast the fight in Ukraine yet. The MEGOGO service, which previously broadcast Lomachenko’s fights, and also acts as the official broadcaster of Oleksandr Usyk’s fights, refused to show the Lomachenko-Haney fight.
The referee in the ring will be Harvey Doc from New Jersey. Side judges are Dave Moretti and Tim Cheetham (both from Nevada), as well as David Sutherland (Oklahoma).
