Five years ago, a photographer asked, “What is your dream?
In fact, he asked this question to each of the 11 “B” classes of secondary school No. 8 in the city of Yelizovo. Before graduation, it is customary to take such photos in an album. Maybe you had one too?
The suggestion to name the dream took me by surprise. Saying “going to college” or “getting into the national team” didn’t seem ambitious enough to me, or anything like that. Dreaming like this: “I want to become an Olympic champion in cross-country skiing!”
Around this time, our daughters last became Olympic champions in 2006, and frankly, that felt like a very long time ago. Something like a legend from a distant and glorious past. True, the Pyeongchang Games have just ended, where our skiers won several medals at once, they came very close to gold …
I, a new master of ski sports, of course, watched these Games from and to. Nepryaeva, Belorukova seemed to me some kind of absolute celestials, Olympian goddesses.
What a thrust with simultaneous movements! What frequency of movements! And how it descends at high speed, you see?! I absorbed every element and tried to repeat something on the track the next day. It turned out average – in cross-country skiing you can’t run at 17 like Olympic medalists run, even over 100 meters. There are no muscles, no coordination after thousands of hours of training.
To imagine that I would race with the heroines of 2018 on the same team was arrogance. I’m lucky – I have it.
Now I will start “teaching and giving advice”. If you don’t like or need it, feel free to change. SO:
A dream must become a goal to come true. To achieve a goal, there must be a plan. The plan must be realistic. It’s not difficult. Just need:
Always go to bed at the same time. With a working humidifier – I never go anywhere without a simple portable, and at home I have some kind of miracle of technology with three types of steam. It is fundamental not to look at the screen of the smartphone for at least 20 minutes before the “estimated time to fall asleep”, but here I still have something to work on, alas.
Eat foods that are simple and as healthy as possible. That is, as usual, but without salt, spices, mayonnaise, butter and what else. No candy, of course. Sweetness in general should be exclusively within the framework of the most difficult training and competitions. This is where the body really needs glucose. At other times, no. Eat nuts and dried fruits in moderation.
Learn how to carefully fold washed clothes immediately and place them on the correct shelves in the closet. In general, get used to doing all household chores immediately and automatically.
Do not quarrel with anyone over trifles and do not pay attention to some quarrels and negativity that surrounds you. As they say in St. Petersburg, “do not bathe” for trifles. At one of the training camps we had a girl from the junior team who, in the form of an ultimatum, demanded not only to open the window of the room, but to keep it wide open 24 hours on 24. And there were four of us in the room, and it was cold for everyone – it was -15 degrees outside. If I remember correctly, everyone was very upset. As a result, the coach found out and decided everything in a minute.
Always make your own decisions in choosing advisors, friends and personal relationships. If they don’t bring you closer to your dream/goal, then why do you need such a company?
I will not undertake to give advice on studies – here everyone decides how important sport is for her and how important profession is after sport. Also, priorities may change. But if you set out to study something, study the same way you train – the key word is “discipline”.
No extreme or even dangerous type of entertainment will be available. If you only knew how much I want to play football sometimes! But risk of injury! Yes, it’s urgent, for someone, to twist their leg is to be absent for a week of illness and to skip class at the university. For an athlete, the same dislocation is a month without full-fledged training. In addition, such a moving speech from the coach that you will then only dream of football in terrible dreams with the face of your favorite mentor.
We will have to give up other things: for example, parties with alcohol and cakes. Or nightclubs. It’s usually “for those over 30”, they try to catch up with young people.
In the five years since the photo was taken until today, I haven’t had ten glasses of champagne. When awarding the Olympians to the Kremlin, I confidently chose lemonade (like, it seems, all the other athletes nearby, however, I do not know for sure). I have absolutely nothing to say about other alcoholic drinks – I haven’t tried it, it’s not interesting.
Is it boring to live like this? Come on, it’s boring to live when nothing is working out – no money, no prospects. Victory is a thrill! Especially the victory over yourself.
Am I always so concretely right? Of course not. But I have been fighting laziness and bad habits for many years. Usually I win. Try it – it’s really easy! You just need to always see the goal. My intermediary is done, the next one is delivered. We work.
