Athletistic/Other. The leaders of the G7 countries, in their joint statement after the summit in Hiroshima, Japan, assessed the possibility of a return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the international scene.
Previously, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be admitted as individual neutral athletes.
The G7 statement, published on the White House website, notes that the autonomy of sports organizations is fully respected and calls for fair sports competitions in which Russian and Belarusian athletes will not act as representatives of their States.
Among the leaders who signed the statement are US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Prime Minister Japanese Minister Fumio Kishida and the President of the European Commission.
