Russian weightlifters will not participate in the Olympic qualification tournament in Cuba

Russian weightlifters lost the opportunity to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics in Cuba because they did not receive the necessary documents on time, according to a press release from the International Weightlifting Federation ( IWF).

The IWF I Grand Prix will take place June 8-18 in Havana. At the same time, 13 Belarusian athletes and six support staff sent in applications for the tournament.

— Until the end of the deadline (May 15, 2023), no signed applications have been received from athletes and staff with a Russian passport. Thus, athletes and staff with Russian passports lost the opportunity to travel to the upcoming event in Cuba.

The IWF provided an equal and fair opportunity for athletes and staff from both countries to compete in the IWF Grand Prix in Havana. These recommendations follow International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines, the IWF said in a statement.

In May, the IWF executive committee decided to allow Russian athletes to compete in a neutral status without national symbols.

The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris. The next selection for the Olympics will be the World Championships, which will take place in Riyadh in September.
