Head of the International Gymnastics Federation: We need time to understand what the conditions for admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus could be

Athletes from these countries are currently banned

The president International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Morinari Watanabe stated that the ban for Russian and Belarusian athletes will last due to inconsistencies in the admission criteria for neutral athletes.

“We have eight disciplines. They are all managed in different ways, so we are looking for neutrality criteria that will suit everyone. It takes time, we can’t make new decisions every day. Conditions for admission will not be accepted until two months later,” Watanabe said.

In April, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak met with FIG President Morinari Watanabe. Yermak urged not to lift sanctions from the aggressor countries and support the initiative to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the 2024 Olympics.

Recall that the IOC Executive Committee recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, teams from Russia and Belarus, as well as athletes who support the war or have a contract with the armies of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine sent letters to the Olympic committees of other countries and international federations regarding the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions. Also, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes.
