Down-the-line.com/Fencing. Veniamin Reshetnikov, quadruple world champion in saber fencing, spoke about the conditions for the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions proposed by the International Olympic Committee.
Reshetnikov noted that his career is gradually coming to an end and the 2024 Olympics are the last chance for him to compete and win an Olympic medal. However, he believes that this possibility does not make sense due to the conditions set by the IOC. The Olympic Charter clearly states that the competition should be a struggle between athletes and not between countries, but as a result, Russian and Belarusian athletes are constantly under pressure on different fronts.
Regarding the status of neutrality, Reshetnikov believes that it is a formality organized by the International Olympic Committee in collaboration with the International Fencing Federation, since the conditions imposed are practically impossible to meet. He didn’t have high hopes that they would be allowed to compete.
- Yegoryan: “It’s not us who should try to get into international competitions, but they should dream that we fence with them”
