The Pole made a statement in which he declared his “commitment to the fight against racism”
UEFA will not suspend the Polish referee Shimon Marciniak from arbitration finals Champions League 2022/23 between Inter and Manchester City.
The Pole made a statement in which he declared his “commitment to the fight against racism.” The full text of the arbitrator’s appeal can be read Here.
“I was seriously misled and completely unaware of the true nature and origin of the event in question. I didn’t know it was related to the Polish far right. If I had known about this fact, I would have categorically refused the invitation. It is important to understand that the values promoted by this movement are completely contrary to my personal beliefs and the principles that I try to adhere to in my life.
“I want to highlight my unwavering support for the values that UEFA stands for, in particular inclusiveness and respect for all people, regardless of their background. These principles are at the heart of the spirit of football and organically coincide with my personal beliefs. Moreover, I wholeheartedly condemn any form of hatred, discrimination or intolerance, as they have no place either in sport or in society as a whole.”
“I also want to highlight my commitment to fighting discrimination in football. Moving forward, I promise to be more vigilant in learning about the events and organizations with which I associate myself. I am determined to learn from this experience and ensure that such errors in judgment are not repeated in the future.”
Marciniak became a participant in the Everest conference, initiated by businessman and politician Slawomir Metzen. Poleak is the head of the far-right New Hope party, which has been repeatedly accused of racism and homophobia. The Never Again organization addressed a direct letter to UEFA regarding Marciniak’s participation in this event.
Recall that Marciniak worked in the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Pole was named the best referee in 2022.
Marciniak will officiate the Champions League final between City and Inter on June 10 in Istanbul. Pavel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz from Poland were appointed assistants for the match. The fourth judge is Istvan Kovacs from Romania. The VAR team will be composed of Tomasz Kwiatowski, Bartosz Frankowski (both from Poland) and Marco Fritz (Germany).
