Choreographer Sergey Komolov, who works with figure skaters from the Cypriot national team, said in an interview with that rivalry with Russian figure skaters is what all athletes, including his students, should seek.
Komolov in Dubai trains two representatives of the Cypriot national team – Stefania Yakovleva and Marilena Kitromilis. Last season, Yakovleva became 17th at the World Junior Championships, Kitromilis took 11th place at the end of the European Championship.
– In the absence of Russians in international tournaments, your chances of getting higher places increase. Do you keep this moment in mind?
– My daughters in the places they occupy now do not care at all whether there are Russian athletes at the tournaments or not. When you’re in 14th place, you don’t fight with the Russian skaters. I’m sure Marilena and Stefania would love to play with the Russians. Competing against the best athletes in the world is great. We are waiting for the opportunity to compete together.
– I thought, on the contrary, that you took the opportunity to enter the notes, while the competition is not so serious.
– We must try to match the best. When you’re competing against people who jump four quads in a program, you understand what to look for. Reaching Russian athletes and competing with them is great, Komolov told .
Russian skaters are currently suspended from participating in competitions under the auspices of the ISU in the context of the situation in Ukraine. The issue of admitting Russian athletes is expected to be discussed on June 9 at the ISU Council.
