‘Nobody is happy with the way the IOC reacted to the situation with Valieva’ – ex-WADA chief

Former World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President Richard Pound has criticized the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) response to allegations of anti-doping rule violations against Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva.

Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing helped the Russian team win gold in the team competition. Before the personal tournament, it became known that the illegal drug trimetazidine was discovered during the doping test of the Russian championship figure skater. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed the Russian to participate in the individual competitions of the Games, where she took fourth place.

– This (the IOC’s reaction) does not suit anyone. In fact, the Russians showed the middle finger. The IOC can’t control what they say. We’re not going to hand out Olympic medals until we find out who actually won,” Pound was quoted by the Sports Business Journal.

In January, the anti-doping disciplinary committee (DAC) of the Russian anti-doping agency (RUSADA) found that although the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bears “no fault or negligence”. Valieva avoided penalties other than the cancellation of her results from the sample date of December 25, 2021. Subsequently, RUSADA, the International Skating Union (ISU) and WADA appealed to the CAS. WADA demands the disqualification of a 16-year-old athlete for four years.
