The Volleyball World Cup will be held every two years and 32 teams will participate

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has approved a new format for holding world championships between women’s and men’s teams, reports the organization’s press service.

The World Championships will now take place not every four years, but every two years: in 2025, 2027 and so on.

As previously announced, the number of participants in the World Cup has been increased to 32 teams. The last tournaments brought together 24 teams.

In the updated format, 32 teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams which will play in one round. Then, the two best teams from each group will advance to the playoffs (1/8 finals, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals).

“These adjustments are part of the FIVB’s ongoing efforts to streamline the international volleyball calendar to improve the overall fan experience by prioritizing the health and well-being of athletes and the needs of other key players in the game. volleyball,” the FIVB said in a statement. .

The updated volleyball schedule should facilitate qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles if approved by the International Olympic Committee.

Qualifications will be awarded to the United States as host, the five winners of the 2026 Continental Championships, the top three teams from the 2027 World Cup (among those who have not yet qualified for the Games) and three others teams to be selected by FIVB ranking.
