Athletistic/Other. Alexander Popov, quadruple Olympic swimming champion, expressed his point of view concerning the participation of Russian athletes in the Paris Olympics and the need to strive to achieve this by all means and in all statutes.

Popov was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for 17 years.

“I believe it is time to return to values such as self-respect. You have to stop trying to please everyone at the same time. The situation we faced in 2016 at the Rio Games de Janeiro, in 2018 in Pyeongchang and in 2021 in Tokyo, where the Russian team competed under a neutral flag, was the result of a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, that is, a punishment for certain errors – a well-deserved and unpleasant punishment What is happening now is completely illogical. What is the relationship with sport and athletes?

For me, everything that is happening seems wild, because it is not in accordance with the Olympic Charter. Therefore, I decided that I didn’t want to and wouldn’t delve into it. The four Olympic Games I participated in were completely different. They differed in their values, spirit and attitude towards people. The Olympic Games are above all about mutual respect. Respect for opponents, results, one’s own and others, respect for sport in general. Therefore, it pains me to watch what is happening with the Olympic movement,” Popov said as quoted by RT.
