Popov was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for 17 years.
“I believe it is time to return to values such as self-respect. You have to stop trying to please everyone at the same time. For me, everything that is happening seems wild, because it is not in accordance with the Olympic Charter. Therefore, I decided that I didn’t want to and wouldn’t delve into it. The four Olympic Games I participated in were completely different. They differed in their values, spirit and attitude towards people. The Olympic Games are above all about mutual respect. Respect for opponents, results, one’s own and others, respect for sport in general. Therefore, it pains me to watch what is happening with the Olympic movement,” Popov said as quoted by RT.
