Elina wants to return home in the near future
Former first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina spoke about her recent return to Ukraine and how she helps her native country and people during the war with the Russian Federation.
“Of course it is dangerous because the country is at war. I have to plan my security measures very well and always be careful. But psychologically, I feel safer in Ukraine than anywhere else in the world,” Svitolina said.
“I have always been interested in politics, especially during my pregnancy, I have many friends who hold various positions in Ukrainian politics, as well as many friends who know a lot about it. But I never wanted to go that route myself. I just want to be aware of what is happening in my country, learn and understand how we can help people at different levels.”
“I am very happy with where I am now, using my platform, using my voice in every possible way through sports. This is my way and I feel that this is my way. I feel like I’m in the right place and I want to use it as much as possible to help people.”
“I want to return home in the near future. I don’t know exactly when, maybe in a few months, maybe in six months. Obviously, the tennis season is full of tournaments, but as soon as I have the opportunity, I will definitely plan to go to Ukraine. In Odessa, I want to see my grandmother, my dad was also there for a couple of weeks. And just to see friends, to come home. I miss my country very much and I am especially sad about what is happening now, because of this large amount of damage in many cities that mean a lot to me.
Svitolina is an ambassador of the UNITED24 fundraising platform, created on the initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to provide financial assistance to the Armed Forces and defenders of Ukraine, civilians, as well as to restore Ukraine from the consequences of Russian military aggression.
Svitolina will start in the main draw of Wimbledon 2023 next week. Recall that Elina received a wild card from the organizers of the Grand Slam tournament.
