Head coach Ukrainian women’s team in basketball 3×3 Yuriy Protsyuk said that the team in anticipation of European Championship 2023 the best basketball player of the country Alina Yagupova may enter.
“We feel that this summer the results of the Ukrainian women’s 3×3 team for the Basketball Federation are one of the priorities in the work. The Basketball Federation of Ukraine made every effort to ensure that the team had the opportunity to compete in the Women’s World Series and receive important rating points. In fact, this summer, the FBU returned the Ukrainian national team to the 3×3 basketball elite,” Protsyuk said.
“Now we are expecting the appearance of three players, leaders of the Ukrainian 5×5 team, with vast experience. Before they appear in the national team, I would not like to name names, but I hope that they will help us in the second part of the season.
“I will open only the main sensation – our star, Alina Yagupova, can help the Ukrainian 3×3 team at the European Championships. Negotiations with Alina were personally handled by the FBU President, Mikhail Brodsky, who managed to persuade her. It’s hard to believe, because she always refused 3×3 performances. Alina changed clubs in Turkey and she will have quite a busy off-season, but I hope we can successfully plan the preparation taking into account Yagupova’s schedule.”
Yagupova is the leader and captain of the Ukrainian women’s team. In the 2022/23 season, Alina became the winner of the Euroleague as part of Fenerbahce, and also entered the symbolic team of the tournament.
In June, Yagupova returned to the Turkish club Chukurov, signing a three-year contract with a team from the city of Mersin.
Recall that the Ukrainian women’s 3×3 basketball team failed to reach the playoffs of the European Games 2023. The Blue-Yellows included Kristina Filevich, Oksana Mollova, Veronika Kosmach and Miriam Uro-Nile.
At the European Championship 2023, Ukraine was in Group A, where it will play with France and the Czech Republic. The two best teams from the group will advance to the 1/4 finals of the continental championship.
The European 3×3 Basketball Championship will take place on September 5-7 in Jerusalem. The winner of the championship will receive a ticket to the second qualifying Olympic tournament.
