Seven-time Olympic swimming champion Caleb Dressel failed to make the U.S. team for the World Aquatic Championships, ESPN reports.
The tournament will take place in Fukuoka, Japan in July 2023.
At the World Championships last year in Budapest (Hungary), Dressel won two gold medals, but later retired from competition, citing health reasons. The source notes that after that he “virtually disappeared from the public eye” and did not return to training at the University of Florida.
Dressel returned to local competition in Atlanta in May. At the American Championships in Indianapolis, the 26-year-old athlete was unable to show results that would allow him to participate in the next World Championships.
Dressel specializes in the 50m and 100m freestyle and butterfly events. He also has 15 world titles to his credit.
