Why are coaches afraid to communicate with us at training camp? Chronicle of Veronika Stepanova

“And how much do you earn? The young skier with the cracking voice seemed himself impressed by his own audacity. Before that, Olympic champions were asked simpler, more standard and more decent questions.

I did not find what to answer right away to the young skier. AND Bolshunov And Ustyugov too, it seems. We all mumbled something indistinctly. Immediately after the race there were – tired, hungry and, perhaps, not the most dashing responses to witty responses.

Only later did the good come: I get as many as you want. Anyway, at 12, I would be very impressed in this regard by my 22-year-old self.

Our system is built in such a way that an athlete is told from childhood: go, run, finish the first category, then the masters, win the zone competitions, and then, perhaps, they will take them to the ‘National team.

In principle, everything is true – only no one explains why.

I don’t understand why these elements of false modesty. 12-year-olds, especially 15-year-olds, are much smarter than adult uncles and aunts think.

Isn’t it really clear that it’s fashionable to become tiktokers, professional gamers, maybe sell T-shirts with your own design in the markets. I have nothing against such professions in principle, but it seems to me that sports are even more useful. And for many, especially from the periphery, much more real.

How many times in meetings with young athletes I was convinced that the Olympic champion for them is 100,000 subscribers in social networks. It is almost the main element of glory. A million, of course, would be much cooler, but that’s Buzova’s territory. More appearances on add points. These “points of glory” in their eyes translate into something material. Here, the other day, an advanced teenager was explaining to me just how much a publicity post should cost me with my reach, and was very surprised that I don’t work with social networks like that and I don’t have the intention to do so.

They see perfectly, for example, in which car the Olympic champion arrived. Or what phone she has. They analyze and choose all the time. On TikTok? Or is it skiing?

And how are our local sports leaders using it?

… I negotiated not only with the Arkhangelsk region. In another region, this remarkable conversation took place:

– What do you expect from me in terms of promoting your federation’s activities in the media and social networks, as an athlete from your region?

(Silence, surprised)

— What are your expectations regarding meetings with young skiers: seminars, perhaps open training courses?

– No, what are you! We understand how busy you are, we certainly won’t distract or bother you with such things!

Whoever said that is a wonderful cross-country skier, well-respected and well-deserved. He just sincerely believes that the job of athletes is to win competitions. But only. With all due respect, that doesn’t suit me. I declined the offer – there were several reasons for choosing an alternative option, but emotionally this part of the conversation upset me the most. I don’t understand a priori why we need an athlete so much if he doesn’t “sell” his successes to the younger generation, teenagers first? What is all this for, really?

… Malinovka this year is a place of pilgrimage for skiers of all ages and levels. For me, the big question is why you have to take the children who have just gotten on these skates to the ski-roller track where the national team trains. Either way, it’s none of my business, as long as they don’t fall, hurt themselves, and those around them.

The question is different: three times in a few weeks, I was asked to meet the children – all three times for autographs and selfies. Well, cool, they did. How about a meeting, a conference, a seminar, an open training? All the time, after all, I hear how coaches say to their young skiers (those who are already 16 years old, CMS level, I believe): “Look how the collection puts such a leg! How did you see the hands? That is, the process of “doing as he does” continues, but only in running and sideways technique.

But the coaches seem afraid to talk to us. For what? Tried but sent? I do not believe that. No member of our team will ever send to such a gathering. At competitions, maybe they can, but at training camp, after practice – never. And even more our coaches. So take advantage of the moment, adopt what you want! And sometimes we have weekends where we come to chat with you. Ask only non-forced, but real questions. Ask yourself what really interests and worries you.
