The well-known coach paid tribute to the mentor of the Ukrainian youth team and assessed the chances of the team in the match with France
Head coach Karpaty Miron Markevich shared his opinion about the upcoming match of the national team Ukraine U-21 against peers from France in 1/4 finals European Championship 2023.
Markevich also appreciated the possible return to the composition of Mikhail Mudrik and the work of Ruslan Rotan at the head of the youth team.
“I won’t be original if I say that our guys have a very serious opponent. And the fact that the French due to injuries will not play key midfielders Michael Olise and Manu Kone should not deceive. The eminent opponent has a long bench,” said Markevich.
“The return of Mudrik? You know, you still need to think carefully here. Yes, the Chelsea doctors who came to Bucharest on purpose admitted that Mudrik is healthy, but on the other hand, he missed a lot due to injuries. Nevertheless, Ruslan Rotan will have the last word and I am convinced that he will make the right decision.”
“By the way, in my opinion, the strength of the current “youth team” is precisely in the skillful “directing” of Rotan, at one time in the UAF they did not fail with his appointment to this position.”
“Ukrainian players have learned to attack quite aggressively, but, unfortunately, they are not sinless in defense. I understand that sometimes emotions interfere, some lack executive skills, but today you need to be as concentrated as possible near your possessions. The French know how to punish mistakes.”
“A trip to the Olympics? Indeed, there is something to fight for. I believe that for now the chances are 50/50, and already during the confrontation everything will depend on the mood, the implementation of coaching guidelines, individual qualities and luck. I think that the opponents will not please with effective actions, but I really want the Ukrainians to score one goal more.”
The Ukrainian national team will play a duel with the French in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. The meeting starts at 22:00. The winner will face Spain in the semi-finals.
