Olympic champion Warholm wins Diamond League race despite actions by environmental activists

The actions of eco-activists did not stop the Norwegian Olympic champion Karsten Warholm win the 400m hurdles at the Diamond League stage in Stockholm.

The incident happened on Sunday. Three women defenders of wetlands took to the trail with banners saying ‘Stop peat mining’. Warholm moved along the eighth lane, so he overtook the militants. Runners whose lanes were blocked ran directly through the banner.

“I was completely stunned. You can protest for any reason, it’s democracy and all that, but…it’s absolutely the wrong way. It’s disrespectful to all the guys who came here to perform well, and to everyone here,” the 27-year-old Norwegian said as quoted by Dagbladet.

“We do it here because people are dying every day from the climate catastrophe. Politicians do not respond. We need to draw attention to this,” said one of the protesters.

Warholm won gold at the Tokyo Games and he also won two victories at the World and European Championships.
