Palkin: Shakhtar has a very deep relationship with van Leeuwen. Patrick is the best director of the academy in the last 20 years

The Dutchman became the Pitmen’s new head coach

CEO Miner Sergei Palkin commented on the appointment Patrick van Leeuwen as head coach of the team.

“First of all, I want to congratulate Patrick van Leeuwen as the head coach of our team. If you look at history, we have a very deep relationship with Patrick: he joined our club in 2006 as deputy director of the Academy, then became director. In my opinion, over the past 20 years, this is the best director of the Academy that we have had – very systematic, very professional. And we will help and support him 24/7 in all his actions,” Palkin said.

“Then he went to other clubs: he was a sports director, head coach of Maccabi. And then there was Zorya, which, I think, became the apogee of his career: they built this team from scratch and took third place in the Ukrainian championship, and Patrick was recognized as the best coach of the season. And due to the combination of all these factors, we have decided to appoint van Leeuwen as the head coach of our team. I want to wish him success, victories, victories and more victories.”

Van Leeuwen signed a contract with Shakhtar until June 30, 2025. As head coach of the team, the Dutchman replaced Igor Jovicevich.

Van Leeuwen became the 36th coach in Shakhtar’s history. Last season, he led Zorya, with whom he took third place in the Ukrainian championship.

The miner has already arrived in the Netherlands, where he will hold a summer training camp. The Pitmen plan to play five test matches.

The Donetsk club became the champion of Ukraine in the 2022/23 season. The Pitmen got into the third pot of the draw for the next Champions League group stage.
