The European Handball Federation (EHF) has taken the right to host the 2026 European Women’s Championship from Russia due to political pressure on the leaders of the federations, according to Vladimir Maksimov, Olympic champion and former head coach of the Russian men’s team.
On Tuesday, the EHF announced that it would be looking for alternative venues for the 2026 European Women’s Championship, which was due to take place in Russia. Previously, it was assumed that the tournament matches would take place from December 3 to 20, 2026 at VTB Arena in Moscow, as well as Sibur Arena and Yubileiny Sports Palace in St. Petersburg.
– There have been many statements that we have very good relations with the leaders of the European and world handball federations. But we understand that good relations do not mean that Russia will be admitted to the competitions in which we must participate or organize them. Therefore, good relations are not a solution to the problem, I think politics plays a role everywhere. Of course, Hasan Mustafa and Michael Wiederer were put under pressure and therefore could not come up with any counterarguments for the 2026 European Championship to be held in Russia. It’s a pity, – said Maksimov “”.
