Agreement with an experienced Spaniard is designed for one season
Defender Chelsea Cesar Azpilicueta will officially continue his career in Atlético. The Spaniard signed a contract with Mattressniks until the summer of 2024.
Azpilicueta’s agreement with Chelsea was for one more season, but the Londoners agreed to release the Spaniard for free. Inter were also interested in the defender, but the player’s environment pushed Cesar to return to Spain.
Azpilicueta has been playing for Chelsea since the summer of 2012. The defender played 508 matches for the Blues and, together with the Londoners, became a two-time champion of England, and also won the Champions League and the Europa League.
Cesar made 32 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions last season. The Spaniard missed part of the games due to a concussion received at the end of the match with Southampton (0:1).
Chelsea have already sold goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Saudi Al Ahli, defender Kalidou Koulibaly to Al Hilal, midfielder Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City, midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Milan, midfielder Mason Mount to Manchester United and forward Kai Havertz to Arsenal in the summer. Defender Ngolo Kante has joined Al Ittihad on a free transfer.
Atlético finished third in La Liga. In the first round of the new season, Madrid will host Granada.
