“Apparently it pays to keep the ISU profitless, but keep the Russians out” – Enbert

Olympic Games silver medalist in the team tournament Alexandre Enbert speculated whether the ISU’s decision to allow the Russians to compete will be affected by the organization incurring losses.

– You must understand that the ISU is an organization that promotes sport. Basically, it is a non-profit organization. Not some kind of retail business that is solely dedicated to generating profits for its shareholders. The organization is committed to the development of sports and the world community expects the right paths of development from it. And the ISU relies on the desire of the global community and certain things that the global community wants to see from them. It is not up to the shareholders to make a profit.

They no longer rely on the advice of shareholders, but on public opinion. And if the world public thinks that it is more profitable for them to maintain the ISU without profit at the expense of taxes or other money, but not to allow the Russians, then they make such a decision. I don’t think anyone expects big profits from ISU. Therefore, the losses will not be a significant factor, naturally, it is an influencing factor to some extent. But it will not become fundamental,” Enbert told Metaratings.ru.

The International Skating Union (ISU) confirmed in early June the suspension of Russian athletes from participating in competitions under the organization’s auspices. This decision was taken in 2022 in the context of the situation in Ukraine.
