Martha’s opponent withdrew in the second set
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk commented on the second round fight Wimbledon 2023 against the spanish Paula Badosaand spoke about the upcoming meeting with Madison Keys from USA.
“To be honest, I played a doubles match and watched the match of Lesia Tsurenko. I completely forgot that I played a singles match today. Sorry, long day, ”the Ukrainian woman joked.
“Well, I knew Badosa was coming back from injury. After an injury, it is very difficult to resume performances on the grass. So I knew she wasn’t going to play her best tennis and I had to fight. I just fought, tried to make her understand that she would not have a chance today. I think it worked. I sympathize that she had to withdraw and that she has had a rough year. I’m happy for my performance today. I hope I can continue like this.”
“I played against the Keys as a pair in Paris last year. She obviously has this great kick serve, but I don’t know how she works on grass. Sometimes it’s good, the ball bounces well, and sometimes, on the contrary, it creates opportunities on the reception. She is an aggressive player, she hits the ball powerfully.”
“I think that I will have to find out a lot during the game. From each player comes “his” ball and these are different balls in sensations. And I didn’t have the opportunity to feel what kind of ball was coming from her, because we hadn’t played singles yet. I will prepare for this match, of course, but so far I don’t seem to know what exactly I need to be ready for. I will fight, I also have my own game, and I will try to achieve the best result.”
The meeting between Kostyuk and Badosy lasted 37 minutes. Ukrainian with three breaks took the first set (6:2). In the second game, with the score 1:0 in favor of Marta, Paula refused to continue the meeting.
Note that Kostyuk for the first time in her career made it to the third round of Wimbledon. Her opponent will be Madison Keys from the United States, who defeated Swiss Victoria Golubic.
