Tsurenko: For me, there was a reassessment of values, when there is absolutely no strength, I remember that I am from Ukraine

Ukrainian woman made it to the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon, spending three and a half hours on the court against Ana Bogdan

Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko spoke about the fight of the third round Wimbledon 2023 against Ana Bogdan from Romania.

“I think that I didn’t play very well, if we talk specifically about the quality of tennis. There were a lot of mistakes, there are objective reasons for this. But no negative thoughts now. I’m just really happy that I was able to win.”

“I was strongly affected by the fact of the war in my country. There was a very strong reassessment of values. This helps me in some moments of the matches, when there is no strength at all, I remind myself that I am from Ukraine. And that gives me strength. In addition, the internal perception of the value of the match has changed. Yes, it is important, and yes, it is very good to win, but this feeling of super-importance is gone. Because you understand that other things are much more important in this life. It allows me to be more calm, even in the most difficult situations on the court.”

“I had a headache since the morning. Possibly due to the intense heat today compared to the days before. This is one of the reasons why I couldn’t concentrate well. It was especially felt when the draws dragged on. I think this is the main reason for a lot of mistakes, because it was very difficult to keep the attention.”

“Then, cramps began in the whole body: in the second set – in the arms, and in the third – already in the arms and legs. Therefore, some draws, unfortunately, were not of very high quality on my part. After the match, I also couldn’t get up and normally come up to shake hands, because my leg was cramped. At some point, I was just afraid to get up. But then, fortunately, it was possible to avoid the continuation of this state. I quickly ate everything I could. The main thing is that I managed to avoid cramps after the match.”

“I will do my best to recover for the next match. There will be a rest day and this will definitely help me. I have a physio here with me who knows me very well, so we will do our best for this.”

“I want to sincerely thank everyone for their support both on and off the court. I know it made everyone nervous. But, believe me, it was not easy for me there either, I also plowed a little there. Glory to Ukraine! And I am very glad that my and the results of other girls bring positive emotions to Ukrainians, because we all really need this now.”

Tsurenko defeated Bogdan in the third round of Wimbledon 2023. In the decisive third set, Lesya beat her opponent in a tie-break with a score of 20:18. Tennis players played the longest women’s singles tie-break in Grand Slam history. The fight lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes and became the longest in the Wimbledon women’s draw in 2023.

Tsurenko reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. In the 1/8 finals, the Ukrainian will play with the fourth seeded Jessica Pegula from the USA.
