Svitolina: At home, a lot of people watch and cheer for me. I knew how much it meant to them

Elina reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournaments for the tenth time in her career

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina commented on her progress to the quarterfinals Wimbledon 2023.

“This is the second happiest moment of my life after the birth of my daughter.”

“It was a very difficult match for me. When I lost 2-0 in the second set, I heard the fans here cheering for me. I almost wanted to cry. It was really very difficult for me, I was losing 0:2, I didn’t play my best tennis. And I really wanted to win. But point by point, I tried to fight, to find a way to win, and they gave me so much strength. It’s really incredible.”

“I thought there were a lot of people at home watching and cheering for me, so… I knew how much it means to them, and any happy moment they can share… Of course, in such difficult matches, when I go through these difficulties, I just think it’s such a hard time in Ukraine and I’m playing here in front of great audiences, I have nothing to complain about. I just have to fight and try to win every point. And here I am, I won this match.”

“It’s really incredible. In January, when I started playing again, I didn’t think I would play two quarter-finals in a row at the Grand Slam tournaments. And I really didn’t think I could play so well on grass. I’m just enjoying the atmosphere, this chance, I’m very grateful for this time that I can play here.”

In the 1/8 finals, Svitolina met with former world number one Victoria Azarenka. The Ukrainian got a strong-willed victory in three sets.

In the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2023, Svitolina will meet with the first racket of the world, Iga Sventek from Poland.

Elina reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournaments for the tenth time in her career. The best result of a Ukrainian woman at Wimbledon is the semi-final in 2019.
