The International Swimming Federation made a historic decision at the congress in Budapest.
The International Swimming Federation has banned transgender athletes from participating in competitions under it. This decision was made at the congress of the organization in Budapest.
An exception is made only for people who have completed the transition at the age of 12, that is, they have already passed part of the process of male adolescence – they can participate in women’s competitions. For everything else, FINA organizes a separate category. It will compete with people whose gender identity is different from gender.
According to The Guardian, 71% of congressional participants voted “for” such a proposal. “FINA’s approach to developing this policy is comprehensive, evidence-based and includes, and importantly, FINA’s approach emphasizes competitive fairness,” said Brent Nowitzki, executive director of the governing body.
In this regard, FINA President Hussein Al-Musallam said the organization tries to protect the rights of athletes to participate in competitions, as well as protect the integrity of competition.
Note that the International Swimming Federation is the second Olympic body to impose such a ban on a scientific basis. Previously, such restrictions were introduced by the International Rugby Council in 2020. Most other sports only require testosterone restrictions so that trans men can compete in the women’s category.
The changes approved at the FINA congress will take effect from now on.
