Ukrainian thanked the fans for their support
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina commented on the semi-final match Wimbledon 2023 with Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic.
“I am quite disappointed with this match, with my performance today. Of course, it was a wonderful tournament, but today I am disappointed. I tried to fight, but I think I forced myself to rush a little. I didn’t serve well when there was this game at 4-3. I think it was also a nerve-wracking moment for Marketa, because it’s never easy to win a semi-final. And I tried to fight to the last, although I did not show my best game today. Did not work out. She played great. She was patient and played great plays right up to the end of the match.”
“I wouldn’t say I was overly nervous, I just should have gotten better at Marketa’s playing style. She is a very dangerous opponent, returns a lot of balls to your half. I’m just not very happy with how I played some of the plays at the beginning of the match, and she played really well and handled my game better.
“I am very happy that there was a live broadcast in Ukraine, because it took several years for Ukrainians to have such an opportunity. It’s very important for kids to watch tennis and other sports, to have something different in their lives, to dream, to set goals for themselves.”
“I was supported throughout the tournament, and even today, when I lost. I am very grateful to the audience for this support for me and all Ukrainians. The British help us a lot in many ways, they did a lot for those Ukrainians who came here at the beginning of the war. I am very grateful to all the people for this support at all levels.”
The Ukrainian lost to Vondrousova in straight sets. The Czech tennis player will face Tunisia’s Ons Jaber in the 2023 Wimbledon final. The decisive match of the women’s tournament will be held on July 15.
Svitolina will regain the status of the first racket of Ukraine thanks to her successful performance at Wimbledon 2023. Elina will take at least 27th place after the new WTA ranking update.
