The league received more than $10 billion from the sale of media rights alone.
While UPL clubs once again “bury” the idea of a single television pool, American sports leagues demonstrate how organizations designed to improve, develop and sell their product should work. In particular, the National Football League once again showed record growth in its annual revenues, exceeding the previous figure by 7%.
For 2022, the NFL generated a net income of $11.9 billion, according to Forbes. This is the amount after all taxes have been paid. In general, the League’s earnings amounted to more than 20 billion dollars.
This amount includes the sale of media rights – about 67% of income, the holding of events not related to football, as well as other marketing activities.
As a result, in 2022, each of the league’s 32 teams received $372 million from media rights, league sponsorship, merchandising, and merchandise licensing. It is noted that in 2023 the League’s revenue will increase even more, as new contracts with major broadcasters come into force.
Company | Amount (billion dollars) | Contract duration |
CBS | 2.3 | 2033 |
NBC | 2.0 | 2033 |
Fox | 2.1 | 2033 |
ESPN | 2.7 | 2033 |
Amazon | 1.2 | 2032 |
YouTube | 2.0 | 2029 |
It is worth noting that the NFL is the most successful sports organization in the United States. Major League Baseball (MLB) annual media rights, for example, are estimated at half that, at $5.2 billion. The media rights of the National Hockey League are worth just over a billion dollars.
league | Sale of TV rights (billion dollars) |
NFL | 12.3 |
MLB | 5.2 |
NBA | 3.0 |
NHL | 1.2 |
