“When we return to international competitions, the world of skiing will not be the same” – Stepanova on a separate category for non-binary athletes

Olympic cross-country skiing champion Veronika Stepanova in her column on , she wrote that assigning non-binary athletes to a separate category for competitions in the future will fundamentally change at least this sport.

Former President of the Russian Ski Racing Federation Elena Vyalbe expressed the view that separate Olympic Games should be held for non-binary athletes.

American figure skater Timothee Leduc , performing in pair skating, at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, was recognized as the first non-binary person in the history of the Games. Non-binary people do not categorize themselves as “man” or “woman”.

– At the end of last year, the following news was quite vigorously discussed among skiers. This is the “first sign” in our sport, and therefore aroused interest. Nordiq Alberta, the regional cross-country ski federation for the Canadian province of Alberta, has announced a new gender category. Non-binary athletes have been added to women and men. From now on, when applying for competitions, it will be possible to choose who you are: a man, a woman or a non-binary person.

In theory, that’s fine – let guys who are confused in their perception of themselves play in a separate category. But the world doesn’t work that way in practice. Nordiq Alberta says, “…Adding the ability for non-binary athletes to compete in their own category is the first step to making cross-country skiing a more inclusive sport for everyone…” Step one, you hear? I have a feeling that when we return to international competitions, our skiing world will not be the same,” Stepanova wrote.
