Pilato won the 100m breaststroke at the World Championships, Meilutite came back and took bronze

Italian Benedetta Pilato won the 100m breaststroke at the world swimming championships in Budapest.

Pilato won with a time of 1 minute 5.93 seconds. The second was a German Anna Elendt (1.05.98), third – Lithuanian Ruta Meilutite (1.06.02). For the Olympic champion of the 2012 Games in Lithuania, this is the first medal of the World Championships after a return to sport and disqualification.

Between August 2018 and March 2019, Meilutite failed three doping tests. In May of the same year, the swimmer announced her retirement. The International Swimming Federation (FINA) decided to disqualify the Lithuanian athlete for two years. Her period of ineligibility ended in mid-summer 2021. At the time of trial, the Lithuanian side reported that Meilutite had not notified anti-doping services of the decision to end her career, so she would have been removed from the control group.

For the first time, the 25-year-old athlete returned to competition at the end of last year.
