Two years ago, Kulichenko changed his nationality and began to represent Cyprus in international competitions in the current season. His victory in the high jump at the European Under-23 Championships, held in Espoo (Finland), became historic for Cyprus – the first gold medal of the continent’s youth championship in athletics for this country .
In his telegram channel, Dmitry Guberniev congratulated the athlete on his victory and wished him good luck and new achievements. He also noted that modest results can be further evidence of the sport’s purity.
Elena Kulichenko became the champion, surpassing the height of 1.91 m. This result was one of the lowest among the winners in the history of the European Youth Championships. Only Italian Alessia Trost (1.90m in 2015), Russian Alexandra Shamsutdinova (1.89m, 2009) and Spaniard Ruth Beytya (1.87m, 2001) won the tournament with worse results .
