Bach: Decision on Russians and Belarusians at Olympics 2024 is unlikely to be made before the autumn meeting of the IOC Executive Committee

The session of the Olympic governing body will be held in October 2023 in Mumbai

Chapter International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said that a decision on the admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Olympic Games in Paris should hardly be expected before the meeting of the executive committee of the organization, which will be held on October 15-17 in Mumbai.

“We’re not in a hurry,” Bach said. “We want to make sure we made the right decision.”

Bach is notorious for his “conciliatory” statements and debatable recommendations. In early May 2023, he spoke of the IOC’s desire to bring athletes from the said countries back to international competition “for the sake of uniting the whole world at the Olympic Games.”

Later, Thomas Bach promised to make every effort to “unite athletes from all over the world so that they can take part in international competitions without restrictions.” The speech in that statement was about the alleged admission of all 206 national committees-members of the IOC in the Olympic Games.

In June, a representative of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe expressed the categorical position of his organization regarding the participation of athletes from a terrorist country and an accomplice of terrorism to the Olympic Games 2024.

Recall, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already reacted to the decision of the Government of Ukraine to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Earlier, the IOC Executive Board recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, teams from Russia and Belarus, as well as athletes who support the war or have a contract with the armies of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.
