Down-the-line.com/Athletics. Dmitry Vasiliev, president of the Saint Petersburg Biathlon Federation and two-time Olympic champion, has called for an end to the harassment of two-time Olympic pole vault champion Elena Isinbayeva.

Earlier, Yelena Isinbayeva announced on her social networks that she would return to work at the International Olympic Committee in the fall. She stressed that she was not subject to sanctions, as she was not a military member of the Russian Federation and the military ranks previously assigned to her were nominal. After that, the head of Dagestan Sergei Melikov demanded to rename the sports stadium in Makhachkala, which is named after Isinbayeva.

Dmitry Vasiliev expressed his disagreement with such harsh actions towards Elena Isinbayeva. He said she was just a girl, perhaps not fully aware of the seriousness of what it means to carry a military rank in the Russian army. He pointed out that many athletes do not serve in the military and may not realize full responsibility for what they represent, but that is no reason to discredit them.

Dmitry Vasilyev believes that Yelena Isinbayeva deserves the stadium to be named after her, despite her unfortunate statement, and she probably didn’t mean to offend anyone with her words. He calls for an end to the persecution of this outstanding athlete, who has recently been praised, and offers to calmly and objectively discuss the situation with her and explain that a Russian army officer should bear the same responsibility as the other soldiers.
