Earlier, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee approved an appeal to the IOC to prevent Belarusian and Russian athletes from attending the Games in Paris. Also, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, announced that the participation of athletes from these two countries will be considered in October.
Zhurova suggested that the IOC might delay a decision on this issue for several reasons. First of all, she noted that at the previous session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a resolution was adopted on the non-admission of Russian athletes to the Olympics. However, the IOC did not take these steps so that it would be possible for Russia to return to the Olympics with full rights.
Second, Zhurova suggested the IOC might delay the decision so they can reconsider the situation after qualifying competitions in the spring. Thus, several other Russian athletes could qualify for the Olympics, which will affect the final decision.
As a result, Zhurova believes the IOC is doing the right thing by postponing the decision, because it wants to bring Russia back to the Olympics in full, not as neutral athletes. She also noted that the politicization of this issue has its consequences and that the IOC understands the importance of making thoughtful and informed decisions.
