Ukrainian is preparing for American hard tournaments
2023 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Champion Lyudmila Kichenok shared her impressions after winning the Grand Slam tournament.
“There was an incredible number of mentions on social networks, an unthinkable number of messages in all possible instant messengers. I received an official letter from the President of the Tennis Federation, many famous people congratulated me. It’s all incredibly rewarding.”
“Of course now, the excitement that was a little is subsiding, but still, even after so many days, this incredible feeling that you are the Wimbledon champion does not go away. Of course, this is the main success in my career. I had victories at the Masters in pairs, but the Grand Slam, especially at Wimbledon, even in the mixed doubles, is the main achievement. Wimbledon has always been the most prestigious Major for me and I always wanted to win here.”
“The support of the British was very felt and it was nice. A lot of Ukrainian fans came and there were those who came to my every match, for which I am very grateful to them. Also, many thanks to everyone who worried about me from home, from Ukraine – it added strength and motivation.”
“Now I will prepare for the tournament in Washington, where I will play with my sister. Then American and Canadian “Masters”, US Open. I really want to finally get home, to Ukraine. I haven’t been for a year and a half, because there were difficulties with finding a training base, we were moving and I couldn’t find the time to come to Ukraine. Plus, the road now takes a lot of effort and during the season it is very difficult to do.
The Ukrainian teamed up with Croatian Mate Pavic. In the final, the pair of Kichenok and Pavic defeated the duet of Göran Fliegen from Belgium and Xu Yifan from China.
Kichenok became the first Ukrainian to win the Grand Slam trophy in mixed doubles. Lyudmila is also only the third Ukrainian tennis player to become a major champion. In 2008, Alena and Kateryna Bondarenko won the doubles at the Australian Open.
