“Many specialties have appeared that you never dreamed of seeing before. The 1980 Olympics are remembered as a lavishly laid table” — Vladimir Salnikov

All-Russian Swimming Federation (VFTU) President Vladimir Salnikov on shared his memories of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, comparing them to a rich party.

The XXII Summer Olympics in Moscow began on July 19, 1980. Salnikov won three gold medals in competitions – at distances of 400 and 1500 meters freestyle, as well as in the 4 × 200 meter relay.

— How was Moscow during the Games?

“Probably like a girl going to a party. Everything has changed – dressed, clean, neat, attractive.

– What object has become a symbol of the Olympic Games for you?

– The indoor stadium and the Olimpiysky swimming pool, which served faithfully for many years, hosted the largest international and all-Russian competitions. There were many new places, many specialties appeared that we had never dreamed of seeing, let alone trying. The Olympic Games are remembered as a well and lavishly laid table, to which we want to invite close friends.

– How did some teams react to the boycott of the Olympics?

– During the competition, it was secondary. When the decision was made, it was hard to accept. I have comparisons – you, as a hostess, prepare dinner, all the best is on the table, and not all the guests come. We felt that the country was mobilizing to prepare the party, it’s a shame that everyone did not see it. For me personally, the task was to set a world record, swim in 15 minutes, I did not pay attention to whether someone arrived or did not arrive.

There was pressure on foreign athletes who could not come, we were not under any pressure, ”said Salnikov in the program“ All for the match! on the channel.
