Ukrainian chess player did not receive permission to leave Ukraine
The world’s leading grandmasters wrote a letter to Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Vadym Gutzeitbut with a request to provide the Ukrainian chess player Vasily Ivanchuk the right to leave Ukraine for FIDE World Cup 2023 in Azerbaijan.
The letter was signed by ex-world champions Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand, American grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So, as well as the Israeli Boris Gelfand. FIDE called on other chess players to support the initiative of the leading grandmasters.
Ivanchuk received a wild card for the World Cup, and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation also sent an official invitation for the Ukrainian to participate. However, the chess player did not receive permission to leave Ukraine. 54-year-old Ivanchuk has the right to leave the country only with official permission from the Ministry of Sports.
Vassily Ivanchuk is a former World Rapid Champion and four-time winner of the Chess Olympiad. The Ukrainian grandmaster currently has a FIDE rating of 2667 in classical chess.
The FIDE World Cup will be held in Baku from July 29 to August 25.,
