Down-the-line.com/Athletics. Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Alexander Shlemenko has voiced his agreement with Dagestan leader Sergei Melnikov’s proposal to rename the Makhachkala stadium, which is named after two-time Olympic pole vault champion Elena Isinbayeva.

In an interview with SE, Shlemenko supported the renaming idea: “Indeed, this topic is being discussed now. I heard about it. A few years ago in Makhachkala the stadium was named after Elena Isinbayeva… Yes, I agree with the renaming proposal.”

He expressed concern about the way idols and idols are formed in Russia, especially among athletes. Shlemenko pointed out that the country’s government often creates idealized idols, which can lead to frustration when they speak out against the country or call for actions that are not in Russia’s interests.

The fighter pointed out that followers of non-Olympic sports, like him, who do not enjoy state support, most often remain loyal to their country and do not go abroad. He noted that it is often the Olympic athletes who receive significant support, but this does not always meet expectations, especially when they oppose the country or use their popularity to help others.

Shlemenko does not deny that Isinbayeva has achieved great success in her sports career, but expresses her bewilderment that she can be recognized as an exemplary idol without actively participating in Russian life and investing effort in its development.

He stressed that he has nothing against Isinbayeva personally, but believes the renaming of the stadium deserves a deliberate approach based on real merit.
