Down-the-line.com/Athletics. The head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team, Irina Viner, has responded to the statement of Elena Isinbayeva, two-time Olympic champion, about her connection with the Russian armed forces.

According to Viner, she believes Isinbayeva did not say anything illegal when she said she had never served in the Russian armed forces and that her rank of major was only “nominal”.

“Yes, she said she chose the path of peace, and it is her right. Everyone chooses their own path – someone wants to become a patriot of their country, and someone wants to become a man of the world. We shouldn’t criticize her for that,” Wiener said in an interview with TASS.

In June, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened an investigation against Yelena Isinbayeva and Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpishchev, who are IOC members.

In July, it became known that due to the lack of support from her country, Isinbayeva would continue to work for the IOC. Earlier it was reported that she moved to live in the Canary Islands.
