Besides the Ukrainian athletes, two Russian fencers, Yana Bekmurzova and Polina Khaertdinova, will also participate in the individual epee tournament, which will perform under a neutral status.
Earlier, Mikhail Ilyashev, president of the Ukrainian Fencing Federation, said that Ukrainian athletes would not compete in disciplines where Russian and Belarusian fencers would also be represented. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed its disagreement with this position of Ukrainian sports authorities and promised to help Ukrainian fencers to participate in Olympic qualification, despite national bans.
Seven Russian fencers will also compete in neutral status at the World Championships. In addition to two swordsmen, there are also sabers Alena Lisina and Anna Smirnova, foil fencer Leyla Pirieva, as well as swordsmen Vadim Anokhin and Artyom Sargsyan.
