Zaitsev’s Olympic gold medal, won in tandem with Rodnina, sold at auction for nearly $100,000

The gold medal awarded to Soviet figure skater Alexander Zaitsev at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics sold for $93,748, according to auction site RR Auction.

The medal is silver gilt, the manufacturer was a well-known jewelry company. Zaitsev ended his career in 1980, which the auction house said made the lot even more attractive.

Zaitsev won the 1980 Games in a duet with Irina Rodnina. They also won the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck. From 1973 to 1980, the couple won all the competitions in which they participated.
