International Swimming Federation (FINA) President Hussein Al-Musallam told an extraordinary congress that FINA would establish a working group to create an open category for transgender people.
A group of experts on the issue of transgender participation in competitions spoke at the congress in Budapest.
We welcome all athletes. All are part of the FINA family. I am against all discrimination. But we also have an obligation to ensure fair competition, we must protect the interests of all athletes, especially women.
A working group will be established for categories open to certain FINA competitions. We will be the first international federation to take such a step. We will expect a report on this work in six months,” Al-Musallam said.
In the United States, the story of Leah Thomas, becoming the first openly trans woman to win an NCAA national championship (Division I), caused a stir. In an interview, she announced her intention to qualify for Team USA for the 2024 Olympics. Some athletes and professionals have spoken out against it and expressed concern about the future of women’s sport.
