Down-the-line.com/Athletics. Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Nikolai Valuev asked Russian athletes to take their statements seriously.

He cited the example of Muhammad Ali, who spoke out against the situation during the Vietnam War, which led him to become a political figure. Such statements can have serious consequences for athletes. Valuev pointed out that athletes are in the center of society’s attention and their statements can become a general trend.

He also mentioned the statement of Yelena Isinbayeva, who said that the awards and military rank she received are formal in nature and that in September she will return to work at the IOC. Valuev noted that athletes need to understand the importance of their words and the consequences they can bring. He encourages athletes to be more accountable with their statements and to study serious political issues, not just deal with superficial and glamorous matters.

He also mentioned that he has seen cases where athletes were given instructions on provocations, and some of them did not realize the seriousness of the situation. He warns that ideological weapons could be directed at Russia and that negative statements by individual athletes could be discussed in the West.

Valuev points out that while an athlete may fluctuate in their opinions due to their interests, that does not entitle them to impunity for their comments. He notes that Russia will always be an underdog in the West, regardless of the athletes’ political views.
