Athletistic / Others. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has called on international sports federations to cancel mandatory athlete handshakes at competitions where Russian and Belarusian athletes compete.

The appeal was published on the telegram channel of the Youth and Sports Committee. The organization believes that such a move will help avoid conflicts similar to what happened between Ukrainian saber fencer Olga Kharlan and Russian fencer Anna Smirnova at the World Championships in Milan.

Recall that Smirnova, after the defeat in the 1/32 finals, wanted to shake hands with Harlan, but she refused and advanced her saber. At first, Harlan was disqualified, but that decision was later overturned.
