Down-the-line.com/Fencing. The Ukrainian Parliament has asked the International Fencing Federation (FIE) to lift the sanctions against saber fencer Olga Kharlan and to officially apologize to her. The RIA Novosti news agency reports this.

According to information published by Olympic wrestling champion Zhan Beleniuk on his Telegram channel, the Verkhovna Rada has approved a resolution that calls for an appeal to the parliaments and governments of other countries, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and international sports organizations to condemn the disqualification of Olga Kharlan.

In addition, the country’s parliament demands that all those who made the decision to disqualify Harlan be held accountable, as well as deprive Russian swordsman Anna Smirnova of the right to continuously participate in “provocative actions that violate the spirit of the Olympic idea.”

It is worth recalling that at the World Championships Harlan was disqualified due to the fact that she refused to shake hands with Anna Smirnova after her victory in the 1/32 finals.

Subsequently, however, the Ukrainian athlete was allowed to participate in the saber team tournament and the IOC granted her a license to participate in the 2024 Olympics.
