“The absolute majority want to live normally, interact, make profit. And only a bunch of idiots got in their way” – Stepanova on the situation in international sports

Olympic champion Veronika Stepanova in her column on , she said that in cross-country skiing, the vast majority of athletes want to live a normal life, compete with the Russians, but a bunch of idiots got in their way.

By decision of the International Ski Federation (FIS), Russian and Belarusian athletes missed the 2022/23 international season. In May, the FIS confirmed the suspension of Russians and Belarusians until further notice.

– The situation in international sport resembles what happens quite regularly in Europe in another area: radical eco-extremists stick their priests on the road. German autobahns are very fond of tracks. Five radicals are sitting on the road – because of them thousands are stuck in a traffic jam or cannot fly away. Once I got into such a traffic jam – it was quite interesting to watch other “stuck”. My German is absolutely non-existent, but even without translation it was clear that it was the people who were shouting to these “fighters for high ideals”.

A comparison immediately came to mind: it’s the same thing in international sport. Skiing, at least. The vast majority want to live normally, as they are used to, to interact, to profit, in the end. And only a bunch of idiots got in their way and won’t let go. But sooner or later this blockade will be broken. Or, as an option, all active and successful people will just leave for those places where you can live and work without violating someone’s “high ideals”, which are really just hypocrisy, stupidity and a dead end, – wrote Stepanova.

Stepanova won gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics as part of the women’s relay team. According to the results of the 2022/23 season in the Russian Cup, the 22-year-old skier became second in the overall standings.
