Athletistic/Other. Russian chess players have performed poorly in the current FIDE World Cup, which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan. None of the Russian participants was able to reach the quarter-finals of this prestigious competition.

The last Russian player to complete the World Cup was Ian Nepomniachtchi, who sits fifth in the world rankings. In the 1/8 finals, he was beaten 2:4 by the Indian chess player Vidit Gujrati, who occupies the 23rd place in the ranking.

The current World Cup holder is Polish chess player Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who defeated Russian chess player Sergey Karjakin with a score of 1.5:0.5 in the 2021 tournament final.
