Ukrainian guaranteed participation thanks to reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 World Chess Cup
Ukrainian chess player Anna Muzychuk advanced to the chess Candidates Tournament 2024.
At the 2023 World Cup in Baku, three tickets to the tournament were up for grabs. At previous competitions, Russian Alexandra Goryachkina earned a ticket, who also made it to the semi-finals of the tournament in Azerbaijan. Thus, the remaining three semi-finalists, including Muzychuk, secured their participation in the Candidates Tournament, regardless of the outcome of the decisive matches of the 2023 World Cup.
Anna beat her sister Maria Muzychuk (2.5:1.5) during the tournament. And before that, another Ukrainian passed, Anna Ushenina (1.5:0.5). In the 1/4 finals, Muzychuk defeated German Elisabeth Petz (4.5:3.5).
The FIDE World Cup takes place in Baku from 29 July to 25 August. In the semi-finals, Muzychuk will play with Nurgyul Salimova from Bulgaria.
The 2024 Candidates Tournament will be held in April in Toronto, Canada. Eight chess players will compete for the right to fight for the championship title with Chinese Ju Wenjun.
