The functionary has worked in the Federation Council since 2001
Former head of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Sergey Bubka will not run for governing bodies World Athletics.
Bubka has served on the Board of Management of the International Athletics Federation since 2001. In 2015, he became Vice-President of the Federation, and in 2019 he was re-elected to this position. Bubka was for some time the main competitor of current World Athletics president Sebastian Coe and was considered his future successor.
The functionary decided not to continue his activities in the Federation amid a scandal regarding possible cooperation with the Russian occupiers. An investigation by Bihus.Info showed a scheme in which the family company of the former president of the National Olympic Committee, Sergei Bubka, Mont Blanc, operates in the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia and sells fuel to the occupiers.
The company formalized its activities under Russian laws at the beginning of 2023, already in the occupied territory, and then began to trade with the occupying authorities.
Bubka has been the President of the NOC of Ukraine since 2005. At the end of 2022, the functionary left his post, and Vadim Gutzeit became the new head of the NOC.
There are eight candidates running for the four positions of World Athletics vice president. The elections will take place a few days before the start of the 2023 World Championships in Athletics, which will be held in Budapest from 19 to 27 August.
