Bubka received the World Athletics Gold Merit Award

Ukrainian functionary left the governing body of athletics after 22 years of work

Former head of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Sergey Bubka received the World Athletics Gold Merit Award. Also, the Ukrainian became a life honorary member World Athletics.

Bubka has served on the Board of Management of the International Athletics Federation since 2001. In 2015, he became Vice-President of the Federation, and in 2019 he was re-elected to this position. Bubka was for some time the main competitor of current World Athletics president Sebastian Coe and was considered his future successor.

The functionary left his post and did not run for the governing bodies of World Athletics amid a scandal regarding possible cooperation with the Russian occupiers. An investigation by Bihus.Info showed a scheme in which the family company of the former president of the National Olympic Committee, Sergei Bubka, Mont Blanc, operates in the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia and sells fuel to the occupiers. The company formalized its activities under Russian laws at the beginning of 2023, already in the occupied territory, and then began to trade with the occupying authorities.

Recall, Vice-President of the Athletics Federation of Ukraine Natalia Dobrynska joined the World Athletics Council. Sebastian Coe has been re-elected head of World Athletics.
